The town of Shiranuka pursues its community development

“to grow together”.

The traditional Ainu teachings continue to make us, modern people, realize
what is really essential in our
life.
Ureshipa Chise is Shiranuka Town’s centre for Ainu cultural activities. It was built at the bottom of Higashiyama Park, where a memorial monument has been erected for the Ainu.
Every year, Shiranuka Ainu Association organises three festivals where ritual ceremonies are held: Furusato Festival Icharpa in August, Humpe Festival Icharpa (Whale Festival) in September, and Shishamo smelt Festival in November.
Established in April 1975, as Shiranuka branch of Hokkaido Utari Association, Shiranuka Ainu Association took its present name in April 2014. Its goal is to enhance the social status of the Ainu and to help preserving, transmitting and developing Ainu culture.
Since its establishment in April 1984, Shiranuka Ainu Culture Preservation Society has been working on preserving and passing on Ainu traditional folk culture, including traditional dances, rituals, costumes, crafts, etc.
